What does exploitation look like in 2025?

It’s not always obvious. It can happen through a screen, behind closed doors, or right under our noses. From exposure to pornography and online grooming, to coercion through social media and peer pressure, young people are navigating risks that previous generations never imagined.

During this 1 hour Talk, followed by Q&A, we’ll explore:

  • How online platforms can become spaces for grooming, coercion, and exploitation
  • Exploration of some of the risks for children and young people on what they learn online about sex and relationships
  • What support looks like, from open conversations to spotting red flags early
  • How parents, carers, educators, and professionals can respond with clarity and compassion
Let’s get informed. Let’s get prepared. Let’s protect our young people, together. Register now for free via that form on this page.

About our speakers:

Professor Alexis Jay is a leading expert in child protection, best known for chairing the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse in England and the 2014 Rotherham Inquiry, which exposed the scale of child sexual exploitation in South Yorkshire. With over 30 years’ experience in social work, she has held senior roles including Chief Social Work Adviser to the Scottish Government and Chief Executive of the Social Work Inspection Agency. She is currently a Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde, where she also chairs the Centre for Excellence for Looked After Children in Scotland (CELCIS), and serves as Chair of the Life Changes Trust.

Lyndsay McDade has led Crimestoppers' youth service Fearless since its introduction to Scotland in 2016. With over 20 years of experience in the third sector, she has held a variety of roles within youth charities both in Scotland and internationally.
Throughout her career, Lyndsay has been a huge advocate for the importance of being led by lived experience and including meaningful youth co-production in her work.
Over the past year, Lyndsay has led efforts to develop a campaign aimed at raising awareness of sextortion in Scotland, working closely with young people, parents and carers, and professionals.
Sextortion, a form of online blackmail, poses an increasingly serious threat to young people, and this campaign has had a significant impact. It has generated over 14 million impressions across youth-focused social media platforms and driven more than 100,000 visits to dedicated Fearless landing pages designed for both young people and the adults who support them.

Since 1998, Care Visions has been committed to creating nurturing, homely environments for children and young people. Through our residential and fostering services, we provide the care and support they need to grow, thrive, and feel safe. Our work is built on the values of compassion integrity respect, and safety guiding everything we do.

Over the years, we’ve learned so much—by listening to young people and their families, and by working with leading experts in child development and well-being. Now, we want to share that knowledge with you. We know every parent is doing their best, but let’s face it: parenting can be tough at times, no matter who you are. That’s where we come in. Sometimes, a few helpful tips or a bit of advice from someone who's been there can make all the difference.

Care Visions Family Talk is a series of online events, hosted by Dr.Linda De Caestecker and Scott Kyle  and it's open to all parents and caregivers. Each session will feature guest experts in parenting and child development, offering practical insights and strategies to support your journey as a parent. Every session will be followed by a Q&A or open discussion, where you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, share your experiences, or simply listen.

We welcome every parent or caregiver to join us, and while we’re committed to keeping things relaxed and welcoming, we do ask everyone to follow a few simple guidelines:

  • No judgment, no shame: This is a safe space for everyone.
  • Keep it clear: We’ll make sure the conversation is accessible to all. If there’s any jargon, we’ll explain it.
  • Curiosity is key-: There’s no such thing as a silly question—ask anything!
  • Join in as much or as little as you like: Whether you want to participate or just listen, that’s entirely up to you.

During each session, you’re free to ask questions or share comments using Zoom’s chat feature. Our hosts will weave your questions and thoughts into the discussion, or if you prefer, you can raise your hand to ask your question directly.
